What is hypnosis
This post explains that trances are everyday occurrences and that hypnotic approaches can help you avoid unhelpful states and find more resourceful ones.
Hypnosis is about encouraging a natural state of focused attention that we all drift into every day. It’s not the sort of thing that you might see on TV. It’s not making people do things they don’t want to do. We work collaboratively with you to bring about the change that you want because you already have the resources necessary to make change. You stay very much in control, and we only work in ways with which you are comfortable.
We all move through a series of trances every day. States where our focus is different, where we become more aware of some things and less aware of others. To give two examples: when daydreaming you may become unaware of what people are saying, even when they are talking directly to you. This is a negative hallucination -you do not hear the voices around you. It’s also a common experience for drivers to feel that they have been on “autopilot” after a journey. They find it hard to recall and may be unsure of how much time it took. This is an example of amnesia -forgetting, and time distortion. All established trance phenomena.
When we have a problematic condition, for example, a phobia, excessive anxiety, depression, difficulty controlling eating these too are trances. Our focus and awareness change and become inflexible leading to counterproductive feelings and behaviours.
Working with you, using your own resources, we can make relatively simple changes to these problem trance states that either cause them not to be triggered or can reduce their impact. We can also make suggestions using your own aims and goals used in a way that is acceptable to the critical analytical parts of your conscious mind. These suggestions help to bring about and maintain any positive change. This works because the suggestions are expressed in such a way that they fit with your unconscious world view.
So, our hypnosis approach works with you to make adjustments to rigid negative trance states to make them much less of a problem. You could say that we don’t so much hypnotise you as dehypnotise you from restrictive trance states and enable you to move away from them to a more resourceful powerful place.
